Understanding Insect Sting Allergy

Reactions to insect stings can vary widely. While many people experience mild local reactions, others may have more severe allergic responses.
Insect sting allergy may involve reactions to:

  • Anaphylaxis

Evaluation at AASP

  • Review of the reaction and timing

  • Identification of the insect involved (when possible)

  • Risk assessment for future reactions

  • Allergy testing when appropriate

When swelling affects the throat, it may require urgent medical attention.

Treatment & Prevention

Management may include:

  • Education on avoiding stings

  • Emergency preparedness (including epinephrine use)

  • Development of an action plan

  • Venom immunotherapy for selected patients

Venom immunotherapy can significantly reduce the risk of severe reactions in the future.
