What Is Angioedema?

Angioedema is a condition characterized by deeper swelling beneath the skin, often affecting:

  • Lips

  • Eyelids

  • Face

  • Tongue

  • Throat

  • Hands or feet

Swelling may occur suddenly and can last for several hours or longer

How Angioedema Differs from Hives

Angioedema is different from hives (urticaria):

  • It affects deeper layers of the skin

  • Swelling is often more pronounced

  • It may not always be itchy

  • It can occur with or without hives

When swelling affects the throat, it may require urgent medical attention.

Possible Causes

Angioedema may be triggered by:

  • Allergic reactions (foods, medications, insect stings)

  • Chronic hives (urticaria)

  • Medications (such as certain blood pressure medications)

  • Unknown or non-allergic causes

  • Hereditary or Acquired Conditions

In some cases, no clear trigger is identified.

Evaluation at AASP

Our physicians perform a thorough evaluation that includes:

  • Review of symptoms and timing

  • Identification of possible triggers

  • Medical history and medication review

  • Targeted testing when appropriate

This helps determine whether the swelling is allergic, non-allergic, or part of another condition.
