What Is Skin Testing?

Skin testing is a commonly used method to help identify allergic sensitivities. Small amounts of allergens are introduced to the skin to observe whether a reaction occurs.
This type of testing is often used to evaluate:

  • Environmental allergies

  • Certain food allergies

  • Some inhalant triggers

How the Test Works

During the procedure:

  • A small amount of allergen is applied to the skin

  • The skin is gently pricked or exposed

  • The area is observed for a reaction

Results are typically available within a short period of time during the same visit.

Understanding Your Results

Results are interpreted alongside your symptoms and medical history.
A positive result indicates sensitivity but does not always mean a true allergy. Your physician will explain what the results mean for your care.

  • Avoidance strategies
