What Are Hives?
Hives, also known as urticaria, are raised, itchy welts that appear on the skin. They can vary in size and may move from one area of the body to another.
Common Symptoms
Hives typically present with:
- Itchy welts or bumps
- Red or skin-colored patches
- Swelling in affected areas
- Episodes that appear and disappear
Acute vs. Chronic Hives
Hives can be classified as:
Acute Hives
Last less than 6 weeks and are often triggered by infections, foods, or medications.
Chronic Hives
Persist for more than 6 weeks and may not have a clearly identifiable cause.
Possible Causes
Hives may be triggered by:
- Foods
- Medications
- Infections
- Environmental factors
- Physical triggers (heat, cold, pressure)
Treatment & Management
Treatment focuses on relieving symptoms and may include:
- Antihistamines
- Avoidance of known triggers
- Advanced therapies for chronic cases
